The 3 Quls: Surah Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas for Protection

Learn the 3 Quls (Surah Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, An-Nas) for protection in Islam. Full Arabic text, transliteration, meaning, benefits, when to recite, and authentic Hadith references.

What Are the 3 Quls?

The "3 Quls" refer to the final three chapters of the Holy Quran: Surah Al-Ikhlas (Chapter 112), Surah Al-Falaq (Chapter 113), and Surah An-Nas (Chapter 114). They are named after their opening word, Qul (قُل), meaning "Say".

While Surah Al-Ikhlas establishes the absolute Oneness of Allah (Tawheed), Surahs Al-Falaq and An-Nas, known together as Al-Mu'awwidhatayn (the Verses of Refuge), serve to seek Allah's protection against all forms of evil, both physical and spiritual, internal and external.

These Surahs are widely recited by Muslims for protection, healing, and spiritual strength, especially during morning, evening, and before sleeping.

Surah Al-Ikhlas (112)

3

Qul huwal-lahu ahad. Allahus-samad. Lam yalid wa lam yulad. Wa lam yakun lahu kufuwan ahad.

Say: He is Allah, the One. Allah, the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born. Nor is there to Him any equivalent.

Surah Al-Falaq (113)

3

Qul a'udhu birabbil-falaq. Min sharri ma khalaq. Wa min sharri ghasiqin idha waqab. Wa min sharrin-naffathati fil-'uqad. Wa min sharri hasidin idha hasad.

Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak. From the evil of that which He created. And from the evil of darkness when it settles. And from the evil of the blowers in knots. And from the evil of an envier when he envies.

Surah An-Nas (114)

3

Qul a'udhu birabbin-nas. Malikin-nas. Ilahin-nas. Min sharril-waswasil-khannas. Alladhi yuwaswisu fi sudurin-nas. Minal-jinnati wan-nas.

Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind. The Sovereign of mankind. The God of mankind. From the evil of the retreating whisperer. Who whispers in the breasts of mankind. Among jinn and among mankind.

When & How to Recite the 3 Quls

To maximize the protective benefits of these Surahs, they are prescribed at specific times of the day:

Morning and Evening Protection (3 Times)

Reciting the 3 Quls three times every morning and evening is a complete shield against all harm.

"Recite Surah Al-Ikhlas and Al-Mu'awwidhatayn (Al-Falaq and An-Nas) three times in the morning and the evening. It will suffice you in all respects." (Sunan Abi Dawud 5082, Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3575)

Before Sleeping

It is a Sunnah to cup your hands together, recite the 3 Quls, blow gently into your hands, and wipe them over as much of your body as you can reach, starting from the head and face. You do this three times.

Narrated by Aisha (RA): "Whenever the Prophet (ﷺ) went to bed every night, he used to cup his hands together and blow over it after reciting Surah Al-Ikhlas, Surah Al-Falaq, and Surah An-Nas, and then rub his hands over whatever parts of his body he was able to rub..." (Sahih al-Bukhari 5017)

After Every Obligatory Prayer

They should be recited once after the Dhuhr, Asr, and Isha prayers, and three times after the Fajr and Maghrib prayers.

Uqbah bin Amir (RA) said: "The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) commanded me to recite Al-Mu'awwidhatayn after every prayer." (Sunan Abi Dawud 1523)
